⭐⭐ 2 stars – Guide Hachette, 2026 selection:
“Overlooking the schistous slopes of the Hyrôme, a left-bank tributary of the Layon, and rooted in sandy soils with rolled gravel, Clos des Sables 2023 delivers a remarkable white wine aged in barrels, revealing fine woody and fruity nuances on the nose. The palate is broad, fleshy, smooth, intense, and complex, showing beautiful harmony and a long, fresh finish. A perfectly measured ageing that pairs wonderfully with white meats or fish in sauce. A wine with excellent ageing potential. 2027–2032.”

An emblematic cuvée of the Domaine, Clos des Sables overlooks the schistous slopes of the Hyrôme (a left-bank tributary of the Layon and sub-tributary of the Loire). The vines take root high on the hillside, ensuring perfect sunlight and ventilation. Here, the soils are ochre and sandy, soon giving way to the region’s characteristic rolled gravel. In the 2023 vintage, we had already gained depth and salinity thanks to the vineyard’s continued work. With the 2024 vintage, we take yet another step closer to the true identity of Clos des Sables.

The colour is a magnificent golden hue. The nose opens with aromas of pear and peach purée, apricot, lightly candied pineapple, and quince. The palate perfectly mirrors the luscious intensity sensed on the nose. While Clos des Sables impresses with its density, fleshiness, and delicately buttery breadth, this vintage is beautifully lifted by a perfectly balanced freshness on the finish. The wine envelops both body and mind for long moments — a pure delight in perspective.

Clos des Sables is constantly evolving and can be enjoyed differently as the years go by. During the first three years, we recommend pairing it with scallops, sea bass baked in a salt crust, vegetable tian, veal blanquette, or goat cheese. After four to five years, the wine reveals a new dimension — ageing brings added depth, roundness, and more intense aromas. Clos des Sables then becomes perfect as an aperitif or alongside wild pike-perch, langoustines, lobster, or well-aged Comté cheese.

The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with no search for botrytised berries. Alcoholic fermentation and ageing take place in 225-, 300-, 400-, and 500-liter barrels. Ageing on fine lees lasts for 14 months, with occasional bâtonnage. Malolactic fermentation is often encouraged for this cuvée. The barrels provide greater micro-oxygenation than amphorae, essential for developing the wine’s breadth, richness, and lasting finish.

Histoire
LE DÉBUT D’ UNE AVENTURE
Histoire : LE DÉBUT D’ UNE AVENTURE

New cuvées are often born in exceptional vintages. We created Clos des Sables in 1997 — a vintage for the ages, alongside 1947. We sensed that such a year would allow us to push the maturity of our dry whites much further and, above all, craft a wine for ageing: rich and powerful. We therefore selected the parcel best suited to this style, composed of rolled gravel resting on schist. After harvesting the grapes at full maturity, we gently press only the finest bunches. The must then flows by gravity into barrels, where it slowly ferments over several months. It is aged like a red wine, with the utmost respect for this magnificent grape variety, Chenin. Clos des Sables frequently takes pride of place in the most prestigious wine competitions.
